Can 4070 Ti Run 4K and 8K

Have you been wondering if your RTX 4070 Ti can support 4K and 8K gaming? Well, this question has been all over my head since I bought it a few weeks back. Finally, I was able to take some time out to find the answer. I turned every stone to unravel this mystery and here’s what I found.

Yes, Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Ti can support 4K and 8K gaming but there’s a catch to it.

Back in October 2022, Nvidia released the 4090 and since then 8K has become more of a performance benchmark for every gamer. Then, a month later, the 4080 came out and it could somewhat support the 8K gaming. But it wasn’t marketed by Nvidia to be an 8K card.

The same was the case with the 4070 Ti, Nvidia didn’t claim it to be suitable for 8K gaming. And all of the advertised performance benchmarks were tested at 4K. So I had to test it out myself. Here are some gaming benchmarks that I tried at 4K and 8K resolution.

Gaming benchmarks

Games 4K average fps 8K average fps
Cyberpunk 2077 5025
Red Dead Redemption4520
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla 6030

The results show that RTX 4070 Ti can handle both 4K and 8K gaming. However, in some games, you may need to lower the graphics settings for a consistent and smooth frame rate.

Can you enjoy 4K and 8K with RTX 4070 Ti?

I can say without a sliver of a doubt that RTX 4070 Ti gives a top-notch performance in 4K games. I’d say it’s the best for 4K gaming at this price point. It’s not only 17% quicker than the RTX 4070 but also has a similar performance to the previous generation RTX 3090 which we all called the 4K gaming beast. Ain’t that something?

But as far as the 8K world is concerned, at this time, the only 40-series GPU that is marketed to support 8K is the RTX 4090. So I did a specs comparison between the 4070 Ti and the 4090 and here is what I found;

The 4070 Ti has roughly half the number of CUDA cores than the 4090, and only 12 GB of VRAM, and the base clock speed is also 200 MHz lower than the 4090. These specs suggest that RTX 4070 Ti might struggle in handling the heavy data rendering of 8K. Moreover, it can only support DisplayPort 1.4a limiting the refresh rates and bandwidth of the 8K monitors.

But don’t lose hope yet! There’s a way to reach playable frame rates at 8K; the DLSS 3.0 technology. This features upscales lower-resolution images to higher ones using AI and makes 8K gaming possible with RTX 4070 Ti.

But would I recommend going for 8K with RTX 4070 Ti? As hard as it may sound, I have to say NO! Although it can be done statistically, when you try it in real-time the story is quite different. In most modern, heavy-graphic games you’ll have to significantly reduce the settings and still, you wouldn’t be able to enjoy smooth frame rates. I mean what’s the point of high resolution when you can’t even play the game, right?

We know that the gaming world is going to shift towards 8K soon. But the bitter truth is, most GPUs don’t have the power to support it and also it’s not supported by many games and monitors. But I’m sure, soon things are going to change for the better!
